opus incertum, 2005
Sculpture
Evolution House, Edinburgh.
Notes
opus incertum is a Latin term translating to 'irregular-' or 'doubtful- work'. The expression refers to a first century C.E. Roman construction technique, in which bricks of variable dimensions were laid in a tight diagonal pattern to form walls.
This work (exhibited at Evolution House, Edinburgh in March 2005) exploited both the physical limits of the paper carrier bags and the surface pattern created by the pins. The nine bags were installed in a row, each one compelled to bend differently by the imposed structure.
